Explore the wild West Coast of the South Island where you will discover some of the most unique environments found in New Zealand.

Starting in Christchurch, students will learn about the conservation efforts in the Red Zone before venturing into the wetlands of the West Coast. Pancake Rocks and Franz Josef present unbeatable outdoor classroom opportunities, along with many other wildlife encounters included on this tour.

Educational tours and talks will cover the environmental and biological science while exploring the stunning scenery.

Arrive in Christchurch where you will meet your guide and attend an educational talk and enjoy a tour with ‘Greening the Red Zone’, learning all about the conservation work done in the area. Travel to Hanmer Springs where this evening you can relax at the Hanmer Springs Spa.


Travel to Westport and explore the West Coast Wetlands with your guide, home to numerous bird species, including kōtuku.


Visit Pancake Rocks and marvel at these unique geological formations created 30 million years ago. Take a tour of the National Kiwi Centre en route to Franz Josef and learn about NZ wildlife and conservation. Finish the day with an evening walk to see glowworms.


Take a guided Glacier Valley walk in the morning and this afternoon enjoy an eco boat tour on the Okarito lagoon, before travelling to Hokitika.


Transfer to Christchurch where you will take part in an educational programme at the International Antarctic Centre to end the tour. Optional add-on activities are available.
