Tour Overview

New Zealand

Sailing / Environment / Leadership

Haka Educational Tours and New Zealand Sailing Trust have teamed up to invite your students on an immersive Environmental Leadership programme on board a vessel once sailed by Sir Peter Blake!

Using the maxi yacht (Lion NZ or Steinlager 2) as a classroom, students will learn about the fundamentals of sailing and the environmental issues affecting the Hauraki Gulf. They will develop leadership skills and work on tangible action plans to conserve and protect our environment and oceans. Students will also develop key skills such as planning, problem solving, goal setting, resilience and teamwork.

Start your Environmental Leadership expedition at the Maritime Museum in the Viaduct, followed by a seabins analysis and briefing. Sail to an island in the Hauraki Gulf, learning the fundamentals of boats. Conduct a mussel filtration exercise and take part in a beach clean up before an introduction to environmental action planning.

After a refreshing morning swim and breakfast, sail to Goat Island. Students will have a marine conservation talk and snorkelling experience. Continue with the sailing expedition after lunch and take part in an environmental activity.

This morning, have breakfast, swim and clean up before you continue sailing. Take part in another educational activity and a leadership exercise. After dinner, an informative Blakey video awaits.

Today you will continue with the sailing adventure and there will be a number of environmental leadership activities, as well as further action planning.

Enjoy your final swim this morning and after breakfast and clean up, it's time for your action plan presentation! You will then sail back to the Viaduct where you will have a final farewell.
