The visual arts links social, cultural and spiritual action which inform our relationships with people and our environment. In Aotearoa New Zealand, toi Māori, the arts of the Māori, are integral to the distinctive, evolving national identify. Developing an understanding of visual art forms in relation to biculturalism in New Zealand and to the multicultural nature of society and it's traditions is important to young people achieving their potential as learners and global citizens.

This itinerary brings the arts to life. We've included guides tours, visits, talks and workshops. Students will discover visual arts in context by developing practical knowledge, ideas, and communicating and interpreting various forms of the visual arts. Students will gain a deep understanding of the cultural and social traditions and practices in New Zealand.

DAY ONE

Arrive into Auckland, enjoy a city orientation tour led by your guide. Visit the Auckland Art Gallery to include a curriculum aligned workshop. This evening head up the Sky Tower for panoramic views of the city of sails.

DAY TWO

Full day workshop, today you will learn about the practices associated with Māori arts and indigenous contexts & connections in a Māori Tikanga/custom based interactive workshop.

DAY THREE

Travel from Auckland to Rotorua today with a stop enroute in Hamilton. You'll visit the Hamilton Gardens and participate in a visual arts workshop at the Waikato Museum.

DAY FOUR

Participate in a Amokura Glass workshop this morning where you'll get to experience glass-making first hand and walk away with a unique piece of glass art. Travel to Taupo later today and enjoy an educational boat trip to explore the Maori Rock Carvings, one of New Zealand's most extraordinary artworks.

DAY FIVE

Travel to Napier today and discover the fascinating story behind the most complete Art Deco city in the world! This is a guided tour and specific learning objectives can be covered in the educational commentary.

DAY SIX

Travel from Napier to the capitol city, Wellington. Enjoy a guided city orientation tour on arrival to include a visit to Mt Victoria for unbeatable views of the city and harbour.

DAY SEVEN

Visit City Gallery Wellington to experience first-hand the best New Zealand and international contemporary visual art. Participate in a Visual Arts workshop which includes a sculpture trail across the city to sea bridge to think about form and structure and a construction challenge to finish.

DAY EIGHT

Visit Te Papa museum and explore Wellington's bright and bold Graffiti and street art scene. Depart Wellington this afternoon and travel home.
